On June 8 we celebrate World Oceans Day to recognize our relationship with the ocean through global connection.

How do we build a new global constituency for the ocean?

This world is connected, not divided, by the sea – through the circulation of protein, goods, people, and ideas. Storm impact and sea level rise can threaten any time, anywhere, making environmental refugees of us all. The ocean contains an enormous, unexplored inventory of medicinal cures, unlimited energy, and the desalinated drinking water that each of us needs in exactly the same amount each day to survive. 

Returning the Gulf Coast to its original splendor will take huge reversals in attitude, policy, behavior and process. Enter the Gulf Restoration Network (GRN), a coalition-based organization dedicated to the protection and restoration of the entire Gulf Coast. 

Tidal generation is a viable alternative energy opportunity, though current applications are fraught with engineering challenges, high cost, and environmental issues. Many innovative new technologies are emerging, making tidal energy generation possible as a fully integrated working system in the new world energy mix.
